One of the questions I'm asked most at the clinic, and the honest answer is that it depends on more than you might think.

If you're considering dermal filler (whether to restore lost volume in the cheeks, soften lines, or refine your facial contours) it's completely natural to want to know how long the results will last before you commit. It's one of the most common questions I hear during my consultations here in Mentone, and it's an important one.
The short answer is that most dermal fillers last somewhere between 6 and 18 months. But that range is wide for a reason, and understanding what sits behind it will help you set realistic expectations and get the most from your treatment.
Why the answer isn't a single number
Dermal fillers are gradually broken down and absorbed by your body over time. This is a normal, expected process. How quickly that happens varies from person to person, and from one area of the face to another. A few key factors make the difference:
The area treated. Filler placed in areas of constant movement (like the lips) tends to break down faster than filler in less mobile areas such as the cheeks or jawline.
The type of product used. Different products are formulated with different thicknesses and properties, and are chosen to suit the specific area and goal.
Your individual metabolism. A faster metabolism can break down filler more quickly. This is simply your physiology and isn't something to worry about.
Lifestyle factors. Things like sun exposure, high-intensity exercise and general health can all play a role in how long your results hold.
A general guide by area
Every face is different, so think of these as a starting point rather than a promise. Your nurse will give you a tailored estimate at your consultation.

Does it just "disappear" overnight?
No, and this is reassuring to know. Filler softens gradually rather than vanishing all at once. You'll usually notice the area slowly returning toward its pre-treatment appearance over a period of months, which means there's no sudden change to manage. Many people choose to come in for a top-up before the results fully fade, so their look stays consistent and natural.
How to help your results last
While we can't change your metabolism, a few simple habits can support your results:
Protect your skin daily with a quality SPF and limit prolonged sun exposure.
Stay well hydrated and maintain a balanced, healthy lifestyle.
Attend any recommended review appointments so your nurse can monitor and plan future treatments.

The most important factor of all
Longevity matters, but the quality, safety and natural appearance of your results matter far more. Dermal filler is a medical treatment, and it should always be assessed and administered by a qualified, registered practitioner following a thorough consultation. At Contour Aesthetics, every treatment begins with an honest conversation about your goals, your face and what's genuinely right for you. It is never a 'one size fits all ' approach.
